As parents of children with special needs and/or developmental disabilities, finding “me time” to de-stress seems impossible. Although it does seem impossible, it is very possible.
I understand things come up, situations happen, and you are needed throughout the day. But you are just as important as your special little one. You have to take care of yourself so you can take care of your child. Finding the happy place when everything in your life seems to be crashing down is the key to a healthy mind, body, and soul. Take just 10 minutes after a shower, during nap time, or when you have help.
This is a breathing technique you can use to help de-stress. This technique only takes 10 minutes. I use this breathing technique every day.
With one hand on the chest and the other on the belly, take a deep breath in through the nose, ensuring the diaphragm (not the chest) inflates with enough air to create a stretch in the lungs. The goal: Six to 10 deep slow breaths per minute for 10 minutes each day to experience immediate reductions to heart rate and blood pressure. Keep at it for six to eight weeks, and those benefits might stick around even longer.
